The RoHS Directive stands for "Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment." It prohibits the placement of new electrical and electronic equipment on the EU market if it contains more than the permitted levels of specific hazardous substances, including lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), hexavalent chromium (Cr-VI), polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) used as flame retardants.
The directive came into effect across Europe on July 1, 2006. From this date onward, all new electrical and electronic equipment manufactured for resale within the EU must comply with the defined limits. However, the directive includes specific categories and exemptions that manufacturers must consider (please refer to your local RoHS legislation for full details).
