Acrosser introduces SMARC 2.1 modules powered by NXP i.MX 8M Plus processor

02 Sep / 2024

Taipei, Taiwan, September  2024  –  Acrosser, a global vendor in advanced intelligent edge devices and rugged industrial computers (IPC), has announced the release of its first SMARC version 2.1 compliant modules, iEC-N141 and iEC-N148. Based on the powerful NXP i.MX 8M Plus Quad-core Cortex-A53/M7 processors with an optional in-SoC Neural Processing Unit (NPU) operating at up to 2.3 TOPS, those SMARC modules are designed to excel in machine learning and industrial IoT.

Technical highlights

For enhanced AI capabilities, the Arm Cortex-A53 based quad-core processor comes with an integrated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) to support image and video processing via the dual MIPI-CSI camera interfaces. Based on the SMARC standard, those modules have also been designed with application-ready carrier boards, enabling rapid product development and proof of concept for your projects. See a use case with our own product, an industrial IoT gateway, SIG-C302.

Given its future-proof design, these low power, credit card-sized SMARC modules are well-suited for a wide range of vertical markets, from smart farming and industrial IoT to retail, transportation, and smart buildings, offering flexibility and scalability across various industries.

“When system integrators and engineers utilize the rich features of the new iEC-N141 and iEC-N148 SMARC modules and integrate additional application-specific functions, via PCIe Gen3 as well as USB3.0 and other interfaces, it is a cost-effective way to have a highly reliable and versatile low power platform for industrial IoT and AI applications. This is the commitment we make to help our customers reduce their products time-to-market,” says Jeffrey Chuang, Product Director at Acrosser Technology.

Advantages and Features

The integrated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) within the SoC delivers 2.3 TOPS of AI computational power, boosting machine learning capabilities at the edge alongside the four versatile Arm Cortex-A53 cores.

The Cortex-M7, which can function as a fail-safe unit, facilitates real-time control with dual time-synchronized Ethernet ports (10/100/1000), making it ideal for demanding industrial applications.

The iEC-N141 and iEC-N148 modules support 4GB and 8GB of LPDDR4 memory respectively and 32GB of eMMC storage in both, ensuring ample resources for complex applications.

These modules offer extensive peripheral connectivity options in a low power envelope that is typically below 6W, ensuring flexibility and easy integration in various use cases. For display needs, dual HDMI 2.0 and LVDS outputs are supported, while integrated MIPI-CSI interfaces enable high-resolution image capture and video processing. Other extended connectivity options include wifi and antenna through PCIe.

Engineered to operate within a broad temperature range of -40°C to 85°C, these SMARC modules are built for performance even in harsh environments.
